Your Source Supported Essay will consist of:

3-5 pages using at least 1 book, 1 periodical, and 1 electronic source

  • You need to form an opinion (assertion) regarding your topic and support with research.  Keep in mind that this is not a basic research paper- you should put your own thoughts and opinions into the paper!

  • Remember to avoid second person (YOU) as well as contractions in your paper.  Try to find your “essay voice” and use thoughtful word choices.  Try hitting “Shift F7″ in Word and it will bring up a thesaurus full of great synonyms for the word you are on!  Word choice, organization, effective use of quotes, and content (a well supported opinion!) will be weighted heavily for your grades!

  • Throughout this unit, you are responsible for bringing all sources, INCLUDING 2 periodicals (magazine, newspaper, etc) plus notecards to class every day.  You should have 6 sources at this point.

  • You need to be ready to begin organizing and outlining/planning your paper by the time you come to class Tues/Wed, October 28/29.  If you do not feel prepared, please do some extra work at home to catch up.

Quote for “Quotes Journal”

11/4/08:    “Try the experiment of communicating, with fullness and accuracy, some experience to another, especially if it be somewhat complicated, and you will find your own attitude toward your experience changing.”   – John Dewey

Students should consider this quote in light of the process they have now experienced in formulating an opinion, and then researching and writing a paper on the topic.  Have their opinions and attitudes changed as a result of going back through the argument?
